Ch. 6- A Race To Kill Time

***Flashback...***

A stormy night, deep in the Mystic Ruins jungle... back in the early 90's... a young, harrowed fox boy with two tails walked, alone and frightened of the world around him.  After all, it almost seemed like the whole world was against him...all because he was different from others.

But why?

"...It's these freaking tails of mine..." The young Tails muttered, bitterly kicking a rock he saw. "...I need to get out more... but who would go with me...?"

That's when a blue blur raced passed him.

Tails snapped out of his funk for the first time in a long while, looking around. "...Wait, was that...?"

It wasn't too far away for him to see that it was a blue hedgehog.  Who, upon turning around, was revealed to be a slightly pudgy blue hedgehog with black, beady eyes, and looked to be in a good mood, judging by the smile.  It was Sonic the Hedgehog! "...Well it's rainy, but what a change of pace from South Island, I tell ya..."

Tails gasped as he gaped at the world-renowned hero.

That's when Sonic noticed Tails. "Woah, did not expect to see anyone out here."

"You...you noticed me?" he asked.

"Well yeah." Sonic said. "You're a fox boy, you got two tails, and you're bright orange.  Or... yellow." He scratched his head. "I dunno.  Point is, you're brightly colored like me."

"Nobody else thinks so," Tails said.

"Well who do you know?" Sonic asked.

Tails hit a mental block: he didn't really know anyone. "...No one... nobody bothers checking up on me... just a sad, sad fox... wondering alone..."

"...Dude." Sonic spoke up. "Looks like you've been hanging around the wrong people." He offered his hand. "I think... you're pretty cool."

Tails looked up at him in surprise.

"Well?  Why don't we team up?" Sonic asked.

"Really?" the kit asked. "You and me?"

"Well, what's your name?" Sonic asked. "There could be a really good ring to it."

Tails sighed. "It's officially Miles Prower... but one of my insult names is Tails, due to, well... ya know." He spun his two tails, achieving flight in the air. "So... what about now...?"

"...Tails, eh?" Sonic asked. "...Own that name.  Fully own that name."

"...Well, I gotta admit, I kinda like it better than Miles," Tails said.

Sonic offered his hand. "What do you say...?"

Tails grinned before he took Sonic's hand.

Sonic flashed Tails a smile. "Let's go to West Island."

***Flashback End...***

Here Tails was now, walking through the jungle in the night. "...Man, it's been a while since I first met Sonic..."

He then looked up at the sky, which was dark and partly cloudy.

"...I owe him so much," he said.

It didn't take long for Tails to start asking, "...Wait, how did I survive that fall...?" It soon dawned on him. "...Dang it... I lost all my rings..." He shook his head. "...Not important, Tails.  First you gotta find out how you're gonna kill time."

That's when he spotted something on the ground: the red Chaos Emerald.

"...Okay, I'm not gonna let Eggman see THIS." He picked it up. "...Ya know, I've been flying Sonic's biplane The Tornado a lot, on our search for the Chaos Emeralds... yet I never INCORPERATED a Chaos Emerald in the design... hm..." With gears turning in his head, Tails walked on ahead.

Just when he was about to grab it, though, a little frog hopped up out of nowhere and swallowed it.

This of course got Tails into red alert. "W-Wait!  I need that Emerald, you freaking frog!  Come back!"

But Froggy just kept hopping along, deep into the underbrush.

"...This is gonna be my entire morning, isn't it...?" Tails began chasing after the frog for real. "Come over here."

***Back at Station Square***

Sonic was in an elevator, with the mayor and the construction worker from earlier. "Just so we're clear... if I get through this now... then it'll be accommodated for speedsters from there on out?" Sonic asked.

"Yes!" The mayor answered. "Thus, the Speed Highway lives up to its name!"

"...Perfect," Sonic grinned.

The doors opened.

"LET IT BEGIN~!!" Sonic shouted before he ran out.

Sonic began running down a decline road that stooped down, before he leaped off, jumping on the floating road to the side, saving some time. "WHEW!!"

As he ran, two helicopters flew alongside him, capturing everything on camera.

"More PR?  No problem!" Sonic said, before leaping up on a roof.

"All over Station Square, the people are watching this live recording on the news... but enough on that." A news-reporter on a helicopter said.

Sonic saw a carrying platform... but ran on the line instead. "It's just more fun this way," he said.

He soon made a right turn.

The helicopters barely managed to follow.

Stepping on a dash panel, Sonic ran on a road that was twisting up to the side of a building, where he then ran up the side up to a way higher UP road.  He had to dodge a few obstacles, such as robot cops with sirens.  Not to mention N64 adds that were running in a store he was speeding past.

"Seriously?" he asked.

Regardless, he continued running along the elevated roads.  Sonic soon saw some Spin Dash jumps that would need to be made. "Ohhhh, yes," he grinned.

Spindashing from one ramp, he jumped up to a higher road, and he did so several times, before coming across multiple platforms that revolved in cycles, with an elevated road at the other side for good measure... which Sonic bypassed with a spindash jump.  Then he saw himself on another road that led to a road attached to a side of a building, the middle of HIS road having a very narrow section that he's have to carefully run across.

"Screw this." He spindash jumped yet again, bypassing the precarious obstacle.  Then he turned left, running into a dozer shovel that did a 180° upwards, bringing him to a roof with a helicopter.  Just as it was beginning to take off, he grabbed onto it.

The helicopter pilot spoke through the intercom, "Alright Sonic, let's get you to the next building."

"Roger that!" Sonic replied.

With the helicopter flying to another building, Sonic soon let go, running ahead, and turning left to find a rocket to carry him on ahead.

"WHOOOOOOOO~!!!" he hollered.

He stepped on a dash panel, bringing him to rush along Corkscrew Avenue.

(A/N: Oh yes.  We went there.)

"YEAH, BABY!!" Sonic cheered. "THIS IS LIVIIIIIIIIIN'~!!" When he was running upside down, Sonic had to screech to a halt. "WAIT!!!"

The Crazy Taxi driver slammed his foot on the breaks. "EY, WATCH IT!!  I'M DRIVIN' HERE!!"

"Wait... aren't you that one Crazy Taxi guy?" Sonic asked. "Dude, that is awesome!"

"Oh, uh, thanks buddy," said the Crazy Taxi Driver.

Sonic and the Crazy Taxi Driver just stood there for two minutes straight, standing or sitting on an upside-down road, without falling down.

"....So, I'm just gonna go." Sonic said as he started running ahead, wanting to get out of the awkward moment.

"Later." The Crazy Taxi Driver drove on ahead.

"...That was awkward," Sonic said.

That was interrupted, however, when he launched off dash panels to a REALLY small floating platform.  Nearby him, copter Badniks were forming a Homing Attack trail that would lead to an extra life container.

"Oh, yeah," Sonic smirked before he made a Homing Attack across the bots and landed on the other side.  Then he smashed through the extra life container, before dropping down to grab onto the next rocket.

"WHOOOO-HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO~!!!!" he hollered as he flew across the sky.

And then...came the skyscraper: a speedster's most pleasant dream.

"Oh cool...!" Sonic stood on the hanging glass... which cracked. "...Uh oh."

CRASH!!

The glass shattered.  Sonic's feet quickly found the surface of the skyscraper before he began to run down it.

Helicopters were diving down, camera crews everywhere. "SONIC!!  ANY OFFICIAL WORDS?!"

"EAT YOUR HEART OUT, MARIO!!!" Sonic said. "I'M RUNNING DOWN A SKYSCRAPER!!!"

With that, he sped onward. "...Do I dare sing or hum Running In The 90's?" Sonic pondered, as he crashed through some glass.

(A/N: No!)

Sonic shrugged, before dodging some pillars stuck out the side of the building, getting any ring containers he could.

He was about to crash into loads of windows. ...Uh-oh.  This is gonna hurt..." Sonic braced for all the glass he was gonna crash through.

CRASH!!

"OW! OUCH!! AH, JEEZ!!"

CRASH!!

When he opened his eyes, he found himself in a lobby. "...Wait, is that it?"

"Pretty much," said the employee from Casinopolis.

"...Which way to Dawn Central?" Sonic asked.

"Right down that hall that doesn't have doors for some reason." The employee/receptionist said. "And... good morning."

"Morning?" Sonic repeated. "You mean it's morning already?!"

"It's a videogame, sir." The employee said. "Unless I'm quite mistaken, since when did they have logic?"

"...You got me there," Sonic said before he sped off. "Thanks, dude!"

Stepping out to the streets of Dawn Avenue, Sonic was greeted with the beautiful sunlight that illuminated the sky in the early morning.

(BGM: At Dawn, from Sonic Adventure OST)

"...Ohhhh, yeah, baby," he smiled. "Now THIS is happenin'!"

Hovering bump kart Badnik cops begged to differ however, seeing as though they began driving towards Sonic to bump into him.

"Uhhh...yeah, I don't think so," he said before he delivered a Homing Attack, followed by another.

He then looked at the ramp that slightly twisted to allow him to run on another wall. "Here we go!!" he exclaimed as he kept speeding along.

So when he got to the wall, he made a sharp right turn, ending up on a roof in the process.  Sonic then ran ahead, before jumping up to a higher ledge, cutting ahead with a shortcut.

As he ran, he noticed that a billboard seemed to be missing from the roof of one building.

"Huh," he muttered. "That's odd. Well, who cares? It's just one billboard.

With that, he leapt off the shortcut and turned left, dodging some cars along the way.

"Mom, look!" a little boy called, looking out the window. "It's Sonic the Hedgehog!"

The mother, who of course was saved by Knuckles earlier from a Badnik attack, came on over. "...Oh dang, it is." She waved out."Ey!  Welcome to Dawn Central, the HEART of Station Square!"

"Thanks, lady!" Sonic said. "I think I'mma stop by here sometimes, eh?"

"Free country, buddy!" the mother called. "Do whateva ya want!"

With that, Sonic ran ahead. "Man, I love this place," he said.

The following road Sonic ran through, was a right curve, with cars and such.  At the end of the road, he jumped on a spring that led him through a slight hole in a building.  And that's where Sonic saw the large fountain.  Once he ran through a corridor, he jumped out and landed on the fountain, causing it to launch him into the air.

Sonic made sure to jump to ring the bell, before jumping on the animal containment capsule, setting all the critters free. "Yes!!" he cheered.

Sonic looked around. "Sucks to be Eggman right now!  Awright!... yeah." He soon dropped off. "So... I should get back to the main part of Station Square now..."

He then looked up at the sky...seeing an image of Tails.

"...I just can't help but think of him," he said.

So he soon enough made his way back to Station Square.  As he did, he then remembered something else important: he still had to find Amy.

"...Okay, TWO people I have to keep in mind." Sonic said. "I wonder if she's back at Casinopolis..." He quickly went over there. "Seems empty... I wonder-"

"HELP!!!"

Sonic gasped before he turned and saw Amy and her feathered friend, caught in the clutches of E-100 Alpha.  AKA: ZERO.

"Amy!!" Sonic called out, chasing after the robot up the stairs. "How did you get CAUGHT by that thing!?"

Before Amy could answer, ZERO flew above the stairs leading to the train, followed by above the train itself. "SONIC, GET THIS GUY OFF ME!!!" Amy shouted out.

Sonic looked at the train door, and shook his head. "Screw this: I'm RUNNING to catch up to her." So Sonic began running on the tracks. "Seriously, why did Tails and I take the train here?" he asked.

This prompted Amy, while being held onto ZERO, to ask, "Wait, you guys used the TRAIN over there and back?  Aren't you, like, the fastest, most charming thing alive?"

"Well it's not like there's much level material to be had out of running on a train road!" Sonic said. "...In the foreseeable future, that is.  ALSO, SLOW DOWN TRASH BOT!!!  AND HOW ARE YOU TALKING?!?"

"...Really?  THAT'S the question you want to ask?" Amy asked, before she started struggling to break free again. "Conservation of energy!  Trying to get out of here!"

The Mystic Ruins train station had begun to come into view.

"There it is!" Sonic picked up the pace.

Amy decided to kick it up in the struggling. "LET GO OF ME, YOU TRASHBOT!!!"

The Flicky let out panicked chirping, trying to escape, too.

So just when Sonic reached ZERO in the wide open field... the sky darkened. "...No...!  Don't tell me...!" He looked up.

The Egg Carrier.

"Well well well, Sonic!" Robotnik's voice spoke through the Egg Carrier's intercom. "Looks like a reunion from since Little Planet is in store..!"

Fired from the Egg Carrier, a green transport beam was fired off from the Egg Carrier, sucking up ZERO, Amy and the Flicky.

"Sonic~!!" Amy called out. "Help us!!"

But alas, they were sucked in.

"...Priorities, Sonic." Sonic said. "Tails can handle himself.  Right now, I need to get up there.  Preferably, through a mountain." He ran on ahead.

***Meanwhile, with Tails...***

"COME BACK HERE, YOU STINKING FROG!!!"

(BGM: Hot Top Volcano, from Diddy Kong Racing OST)

Tails was sand-boarding through the dunes, trying to catch Froggy.

"WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD DO THIS FOR FUN?!?" Tails asked.

"Ribbit!!" Froggy croaked, as if agreeing.

However, given that Tails was sandboarding through red arches... he couldn't help but find some amusement out of his situation. "...Okay, maybe sandboarding solo IS pretty fun."

But that's when he saw the crumbling pillars of rock, toppling towards him.

"...And it just got dangerous," he squeaked.

Tails was JUST able to swerve around the toppling rock pillars. "Okay, this is fine, this is good!" he stammered. "Everything under control!"

Tails was starting to get into the whole jam of sandboarding down the sandy slope, as shone by him getting closer to the frog. "Get over here, you!  You can't beat the Sandboarding Guru!"

"Ribbit-ribbit!!" Froggy croaked as he kept hopping away.

"...I'll surprise him, then." Tails said, veering left while Froggy went to the right. "I'll blindside the frog."

As he got closer, he grabbed Froggy, who croaked in surprise.

"Yes!" the kit cheered. "Got you!"

Tails reached the bottom of the sand slope. "Now, one Chaos Emerald please."

He squeezed on Froggy's side, causing him to cough up the Chaos Emerald.

"Thank you," Tails said...but then, there was a blinding flash of light. "Woah, wait... wha-?"

He found himself in what looked like the Mystic Ruins, except it was...newer.  Like it had just been built.

"Woah... this is weird..." Tails mused. "Wasn't I in the desert... holding a frog...?"

Deciding he wouldn't get any answers just standing around, he went off to check his surroundings. "...I am SO taking mental note of this place..." Tails said as he flew with his two tails.

Echidnas who weren't Knuckles were standing around, or walking around.  To his left, he saw an item in the raised stone stairs.

"This looks likes it's worth investigating," he said before he climbed up.  Upon closer inspection, he saw that it was a ribbon of some sort.

"Oh, cool!" the kit exclaimed as he put it on his chest, like a badge.

Cue the familiar ball of light: "You've got the Rhythm Badge!"

"The Rhythm Badge?" Tails repeated.

"When attacking, hold the pose and momentum of the attack, and you'll be able to continuously spin with your tails attacking anything in its path." The ball of light said, before flying off.

"...Sweet!" Tails said. "Now Eggman won't see me coming!" He then looked at the front of the temple... seeing a peach colored echidna stand there. "...Hello, who is this?"

He stepped down the stairs, preparing to introduce himself to her.

"Chaos is power, enriched by the heart." The young echidna said.

"Huh?" Tails muttered, tilting his head in confusion.

This caused the peach-colored echidna to turn around. "Oh, excuse me.  I have not seen you there.  I was just reciting a saying I had grown up with."

"Really?" Tails asked.

"The full saying is as follows," the peach colored echidna said. "The servers are the 7 Chaos.  Chaos is power, enriched by the heard." She closed her eyes. "Though it is not known for certain what the 7 Chaos are, I feel that the 7 Chaos... are the 7 emeralds at the shrine."

"Shrine?" Tails repeated.

The echidna pointed at the direction Tails appeared from. "There is a shrine over there, sealed for today." She then took a look at Tails. "Now... who are you?"

Cue Tails being surrounded by a blinding light.

When he came to, he found himself back in the jungle, again.  Holding onto Froggy, no less.

"...Woah... that was weird..." Tails said.

But then, he spotted a familiar purple cat nearby. In fact, the cat was looking right at him.  The cat was RUNNING at him, afixiated on the green frog he was holding, complete with catchphrase: "FROGGY~!!"

"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH~!!!!" Tails screamed. "HELP!!!!"

Naturally, he dropped Froggy, causing Big the Cat to stumble, with Froggy bouncing in him. "...Froggy!  Come back!" Big chased after the frog some more.

Tails saw ALL of this happen. "...I'm... just gonna let those two do their thing." He pulled out the red Chaos Emerald from earlier. "...No, I have PLANS for you.  I shall call my latest masterpiece the Tornado II!" He ran up the stairs to his workshop.

***But meanwhile***

Knuckles was surveying the Master Emerald he mostly put together.  It was still incomplete. "...Just three pieces remain.  But... where could they be...?"

That's when the broken emerald showed him a familiar image: the Egg Carrier.

"Figures that these would be up in the Ehg Carrier." Knuckles said. "How would I get there, though...?" Walking over to the edge of the Emerald Shrine, he then saw something peculiar in the jungle. It looked like a red, metal pipe of some sort.

"...Okay, I know that's never been there before," he said.

But then, something peculiar happened: Knuckles saw a red robot, coming from Red Mountain. "...Hello, an Eggman robot, eh?" Knowing there was only one way to go, he followed it.

Knuckles unwittingly passed Sonic along the way.

He ended up boarding that mine cart again that led to the ruins. "...Wasn't I just here...?"

He then shrugged.

"Eh, oh well," he said.

When he got further on ahead, it turned out that the red tube-like structure... led to a new base developed by Robotnik. "...What the...?"

He approached it, and when he saw the door in the shape of Robotnik's face, that was the final nail in the coffin that confirmed it. "...Let's go."

To Be Continued...

Ah. Speed Highway, the most iconic level of Dreamcast Sonic besides City Escape.
